We walked to Kendall at noon on Wednesday to have lunch with Prat (see my Day 4 post.) Ali had already gone to his class early in the morning. We talked about start-ups, returning home etc. When Prat complained about the lack of funding support for technology start-ups in India due to the attraction of the construction business, it sounded very familiar to the Turkish situation.
Then we had a nostalgic (for me) walk from MIT to Harvard along the Mass Ave. Thanks to a very timely email reminder from Çiğdem, we stopped at Toscanini’s for ice cream. I sampled the cardamon flavor. On the way we stopped at the Design Within Reach (DWR) showroom for about fifteen minutes testing the furniture. Near Harvard Square we entered the Harvard Bookstore, one of the best bookstores with a very nice collection.
When we walked back home, we had completed a 5 mile circuit of Cambridge.
Gonca picked us up in the evening for a very nice dinner at her house. Last we’ve seen each other was in 1982. We got to meet her husband Curtis and daughter Elif and had a very pleasant evening reminiscing the old days and catching up about what happened in between.
What a wonderful walk down memory lane it was last night. I met Tanju’s wonderful family and shared some pictures from the old days when Zehra’s husband, i.e. Ali and İrem’s father, was a young MIT student, learning folk dancing from yours truly while teaching himself how to play an authentic drum from his homeland of Sivas! Something about time that is so ruthless and yet so essential for human connections…
Can’t wait to hear from you during your cross country adventures!
