[11 August, Tanju] We arrived at Chicago at Sunday night. Our hotel was centrally located and family oriented. When I attempted to post my Niagara notes before down, I spilled water on my laptop’s keyboard. Thus we had to start our tour by walking to the Apple store on Michigan Avenue.
Our intention in Chicago was an architectural tour of the Windy City. We used an iPhone app to visit the iconic buildings. But we first stopped at the Millenium Park to see Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate. This “bean” really invites everyone to touch and interact with it. The park also has two Frank Gehry structures, a concert area and a walking bridge. As we left the park we saw the whimsical Crown Fountain by Jaume Plensa.
During our architectural tour we saw the “Flamingo” statue by Alexander Calder. This brought the number of artists whose works we’ve seen on MIT campus and Chicago to three: Alexander Calder (Big Sail, Flamingo), Jaume Plensa (Alchemist, Crown Fountain), Frank Gehry (Stata Center, Jay Pritzker Pavilion & BP Pedestrian Bridge).
We completed out walk by eating delicious (and vallet-friendly) Chicago deep-dish pizza.
