Apple announced that the next version of Mac OS X (10.7) will be called “Lion” continuing with the tradition of big cat names. Lion sits at the top of the cat family hierarchy in human imagination. Could this be the sign that 10.7 will be the last release of Mac OS X? By the time 10.7 is released next year, the OS will be 10 years old.
On the other hand, Apple is making in roads to the enterprise market with MacBooks. This implies longer term commitment to the platform. Maybe beyond 10.7, OS X and iOS convergence will be taken to a new level. Hints of this direction is already in the new interface style of iLife’11 and Lion.
